One of the oldest cities in the world, Babylon is rich in historical and archaeological significance. Although the ruins of this ancient city have suffered conflict and neglect, they are again open for public viewing. Of course, travelers should carefully review the security situation before planning a trip to Iraq. Nonetheless, highlights like an original ancient lion sculpture and a reconstruction of the striking blue Ishtar Gate justify a visit to Babylon for travelers already in the country.

New attractions have opened in the Babylon area. The Babil provincial government has opened a park along the Euphrates River where tourists can relax. In addition, visitors wishing to spend the night can rent a room amid the gaudy 1980s' glamor of one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces.
