Salmiya was a very important town in the 1960's for expats and many have lived here. The Iraqis destroyed Salmiya during the Gulf War. After the war many new modern high rise buildings rose in Salmiya, especially near the coast. This resulted in a real estate boom, forcing many expats to the inner parts of the city away from the coast. Today, Salmiya is a beautiful city along the coastline with it's beaches and malls.

Generally, Kuwait has a low crime rate. Though beware of people who act like police men who ask for documents like passports and civil IDs, foreign residents are usually targeted and this usually occurs in foreign communities in residential blocks.
