WARNING: Travel to Lebanon is considered by the US Department of State to be DANGEROUS due to a spillover of violence from the civil war in Syria. US Department of State Travel Warning - Lebanon There have been reports of a few instances of rocket fire in the Beqaa valley and southern Beirut. Syrian rebels have warned that they will carry out attacks in Lebanon in response to Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict, and in the Lebanese city of Tripoli, the army is currently (Nov 2014) fighting Islamist rebels. Travel to the northern and eastern border regions is especially dangerous and should be avoided. Public demonstrations, and family, neighbourhood, or sectarian disputes often escalate quickly and can lead to gunfire or other violence with little or no warning. Also as of 1 November 21 2014, the Islamic state group has entered Lebanon and are as violent as in Iraq and Syria.

Despite a few incidents, Beirut and nearby areas as well as many other parts of the country are still reasonably safe and the chances to be caught up in anything are very remote. The terminally unsafe areas of the country include Tripoli and border areas near Syria and to a lesser degree Israel. South Beirut, Baalbek, Sidon, Beqaa valley have also suffered sporadic clashes and/or security incidents but these are occasional events that don't happen often. Check your foreign office for advice before travelling to Lebanon. If you must travel to more dangerous parts of Lebanon, see War zone safety.
